First Annual Student Recognition Event
December 5, 2005

On December 5th from 5:30-7:00, the Merced Scholars Charter School held its Student Recognition Awards Ceremony.  We started the evening with a Welcome from our Student Body President, Lexie Pivirotto-Britton.  Career Educator, Mary Frances Green, then provided valuable information to parents regarding the school’s mission to provide a coordinated Career Education Plan beginning in the 9th grade. She emphasized that each grade level had specific events to assist students to develop a career and college-going mindset. She also shared with parents that our partnership with Merced College was unique because we have established a partnership with their Counseling Department whereby Jeff Photo1

Tassey, College Counselor, will be meeting one-on-one with each student and their parent to review the results of the Accuplacer and Lassi Academic and Career/College interest surveys. To emphasize the importance of students taking advantage of all Career Education opportunities, the staff next provided a humorous skit on how not to act at a job interview. Laughter abounded when teacher, Debbie Nishihama, arrived late to her job interview chewing bubble gum and talking on her cell phone. Following this lively entertainment, presentation of awards were given to several students.  Students who received awards included:
  • Most Academic Improvement:  Alex Camberos, Paul Mahoney, Justin Escobedo, Greg Lumley, Vivanna Mendoza, and Desiree Chapline.
